Assam Mangalam SFTGFOP1: a quality clonal.
This Assam Mangalam tea has an enthusiastic following and originates from Nagaland province, near to where tea was first found to be growing wild back in the nineteenth century. The garden itself was not established until 1973 but it has earned a considerable reputation. This is a high-grade (SFTGFOP1) picking with abundant golden tips giving the tea a certain elegance. It is bright, rich, spicy and has a full bodied maltiness and sufficient astringency to take milk well, producing a great breakfast tea. Use one teaspoon per cup and one for the pot with freshly drawn and boiled water. Infuse for four minutes. Drink with or without milk.
"This tea itself has a beautiful deep copper colour, which I think looks beautiful and it’s a crystal clear brew which is exactly what I like to see. When you add milk it turns a lovely golden colour, which is do like my tea at to be able to hold it own against the milk. The smell is as divine as divine gets for an Assam tea, beautiful tea smell with a bit of a malted biscuit (type of cookie for the Americans) type smell. The flavour is as divine as the smell, if not more so. This tea was brewed with 100c water for 5mins in a teapot with removable leaf holder and strainer. There’s little astringency in this Assam which surprised me as most Assam I’ve had have had an astringent note to them but not this one. I’m one that does like the astringency but I do think the actual flavour of the tea makes that a non issue. Overall I’m extremely impressed by this tea and after drinking Assam for years this is by far the best I’ve ever had. I highly recommend this tea and say give it a shot, and it’s worth the price which i think is a fair one. Also, I think these caddy’s look excellent with the bright coloured label and a plain bushed steel caddy." Blogger review.
