Sencha Organic: Japanese green tea from Uchiyama

This sencha organic Uchiyama is an early spring picking from Uji near Kyoto and is rich in healthy polyphenols. This steamed tea produces a sparkling golden infusion with a smooth, appetising grassiness and a flowery aroma. Infuse 3 grams per person for two minutes with water that has come well off the boil to around 80 degrees C. Can be infused several times.

Sencha was developed in Japan by intellectuals keen to create a simpler method of drinking and appreciating tea compared with the rigidity of the Tea Ceremony where powdered tea was used. It follows the approach taken by the Chinese with their Yixing teapots, using instead an equally simple porcelain teapot with projecting handle. The tea was then drunk from a straight-sided chawan teacup.

Tea from Grey's Teas

Our teas are loose leaf and we specialise in large leaf grades. All are made using traditional orthodox methods. Our teas are from named tea gardens or defined areas of origin.

Sourcing our tea

This Uchiyama Sencha organic has been chosen for its distinctive, balanced flavour, aroma and appearance. Our tea is carefully sourced from long-established shippers. We can therefore guarantee the quality and origin of each tea and that it conforms to UK food and drink health regulations and our own demanding grading requirements.

The benefits of loose leaf tea

This loose leaf tea enables the full flavour characteristics of the tea to infuse. This tea is chosen for its high grade which imparts the flavour and aroma characteristics for which this tea is best known. A extra time is necessary when infusing large leaf grades but you will be rewarded with a superior, more balanced cup. You will be well rewarded for your patience!

These square, silver coloured caddies have hinged lids. Again, 60 gram, 125 gram and 250 gram options are generally available as options which can be selected from the drop-down list. Packets and caddies have full-colour labels.

My first experiments with green tea. Like it very much. Almost used it up already.

    Product: Covered in comments above.
Service: Apart from a little spillage from the filled tin which needed to be wiped away on unwrapping, I have no complaints. Tea really good, possibly a little ‘dusty’.
Vendor response: I am concerned to hear your reservations about the teas received. Tins are prone to leakage so the lids are taped. There should be no reason for the tea being ‘dusty’. I suggest that you return the tea at our cost so we can examine this and send new lots.

My first time with green tea and love it.
    Will be ordering again.

I have almost finished my second batch (250 g this time), tried other green teas on the way, but always came back to this one.
I knew that Sencha Uchiyama is particularly high in polyphenols, but only found out a few weeks ago that in order for those to unfold one needs to infuse the tea for 8-10 minutes (not like it says on the packet 2 min). Still absolutely delicious!

I had been searching for Sencha Uchiyama green tea for a while until I found it on Grey’s Teas. Service was excellent, and the tea is lovely. I am now ordering my second batch. Would agree with earlier comments – the tea leaves are best steeped for 10 mins to get the full benefits.
