Russian Caravan tea: a traditionally aromatic blend

This classic Russian Caravan tea is made from a traditional blend of large leaf Chinese black and oolong teas. It has a distinctive and attractive complexity that is sure to make it one of your favourites. This tea was originally traded in the 18th century during the reign of Catherine the Great, carried by camel caravan via the Russian steppes, along the Silk Road to Moscow. This traditional blended tea may be drunk morning or afternoon. Infuse one teaspoon per person plus one for the pot for four minutes. Milk is optional.

First drunk by the Cossacks, since the 17th century tea has been brought to the fair at Nizhny Novgorod, on the Volga river 200 miles to the east of Moscow. This was Imperial Russia’s focus for traded luxuries. Prepared in the samovar around an invitingly warm hearth, Alexander Pushkin declared that “ecstasy is a glass of tea and a piece of sugar in the mouth”.

The benefits of loose leaf tea

  • This is a carefully sourced tea chosen for its distinctive, balanced flavour.
  • Loose leaf tea enables the full flavour characteristics of the tea to infuse.
  • The tea is chosen for its high grade which imparts the flavour and aroma characteristics for which this tea is best known.
  • A little patience is required when infusing large leaf grades but you will be rewarded with a superior, more balanced cup.

Disaster! I had run out of Russian Caravan! But Grey’s came to the rescue. Excellent tea — and service. Thank you.

  2. lkillian10

Have been drinking ‘Russian Caravan’ tea for some time now …. Grey’s blends the best! Grey’s is a wonderfully smooth blend that is good at any time of day.

  3. lkillian10

Have been buying Russian caravan for some time now from Fortnum’s …… they have stopped selling refills so needed to find an alternative supplier …… Grey’s Teas have come up trumps! Excellent brew, a cut above the rest as far as character, and a great drink at any time of day. Just as good if not better than Fortnum’s in my view. I also love the simplicity and functionality of the tin supplied. Thank you.too.

  4. CHRIS

A tea with real individual character. Lovely fragrant finish. A joy to drink at anytime.

Product: Put off ordering my last order until the Russian Caravan came back into stock – It’s a really lovely tea! I always have some in the cupboard
Service: Tea arrived quickly and was well packed – Naturally the tea itself tastes just great

  8. Rupert West

    Product: Excellent
Service: Great company, Great Tea – Range of my favourite teas a little limited this order due to no stock. But what is available was good.
Vendor response: We have just received a new shipment of Assam and more will arrive on Monday. I am pleased that you like our range of teas.

  9. Paul Driver

Product: It is a good wiry, twisted leaf tea. This tea has been blended with a high proportion of oolong tea, giving it a pronounced flowery nose and flavor. I personally find it a a little unbalanced with the oolong predominating in the resulting brew.
Service: A fast efficient service from a company providing a good selection of teas
Vendor response: I see that as well as trying Haijan you have also previously bought Keemun Mao Feng and Peony. You may want to try the Hoa Ya A and B and Jhin Hao.

  13. Richard Clifton

  14. Mrs D. Ghalebi

Product: Perfect blend, not too strong and with full flavour without being bitter or overpowering.
Service: Great selection of teas, easy to use website and quick delivery.

  15. Jen Musgreave

Product: This is the tea we take on holiday with us as the best of both worlds (strong yet delicate). We re-buy this regularly
Service: I have ordered many times from Greys teas – it would be helpful if they remembered what I’ve ordered in the past and stop treating me as a new customer each time. Also when Greys recommend new teas in their newsletters, it would be good if they took account of my previous purchases: I always buy Keemun Dahlia and Ceylon Kenilworth – I would like to know other teas that are similar in character. I work in CRM and would happily advise Greys on how to improve their relationships with existing customers!
Vendor response: You are free to create an account where you will be able to see previous teas ordered by yourself since you created the account. We group teas by growing regions under black, green, oolong and white teas so comparable teas will be on the same sub-section page with links through to the individual tea pages where their tasting notes appear in full. On occasions we do cross reference such as our Earl Grey blend is linked with our China green Earl Grey tea. We do value your feedback. I hope this response is helpful.

  16. Laurie Moye

Product: Only good, because it’s a bit bland compared with others I have used
Service: No problems with the service

  17. Graham Monteith

    Product: The tin was bashed
    Service: Good service
Vendor response: I am sorry to hear that the tin was dented. This is the first occasion we have heard of this problem. We do protect them with stiff corrugated card inside the padded outer bag. It also states ‘Do not crush’ on the label but realsie that unfortunately this could be seen as an invitation to a minority. If you would like us to send you a new tin of this tea please contact us.
