Darjeeling Margaret's Hope FTGFOP: from one of the most celebrated tea gardens.
The greeny brown leaf of Darjeeling Margaret's Hope produces a light, floral tea with the distinctive muscatel taste of a really good Darjeeling. Margaret's Hope tea is probably the most famous of Darjeeling's gardens. The garden was established in 1865 by Mr Cruikshank beside the Balsun river. It rises to an altitude of up to 5000 ft. near to Kurseong. Tragically his daughter Margaret died on the long voyage home to England and he re-named the garden in the hope that he would be forever reminded of her. The Margaret's Hope garden takes seriously its welfare responsibilities to its staff and has improved housing, water supply and medical facilities. Infuse one teaspoon per cup of this celebrated tea with freshly boiled water for four minutes.
Excellent Darjeeling "Fragrant complex Darjeeling at a modest price. Has bags of Darjeeling character."
"This was our first foray into 'good' teas and it hasn't disappointed. This darjeeling was so different to our usual reasonable quality shop bought loose leaf darjeeling; not bitter if left too long, clear taste of flavour, wonderfully refreshing. A really good tea!"
Great tea "Darjeeling is probably the best of teas with a balance of freshness and depth and this tea does not disappoint. I have certainly not tasted better at this price range."
"An exquisite tea. I had never had such a good Darjeeling before, though I've sampled many. This is the tea that made understand that a whole world of better teas was waiting out there, unbeknown to me."
We enjoy this tea in the afternoon. "We like Darjeeling tea but have previously only bought it in the supermarket. There is a world of difference here. Lovely delicate flavour."
Subtle, delicate and elegant "It took a while to get used to this tea: I normally drink robust Assams and initially found this tea a little bland. But after judicious calibration [i.e. more leaves than normal in the pot] and letting it stand a full 5 minutes, its charm and subtlty emerged. Excellent with cucumber sandwiches."
Smooth "Very gentle subtle taste. A great buy."

Product: A new one for me and please bear in mind that I regularly drink Grey’s China green, so what I say about Darjeeling Margaret’s Hope will be coloured by my comparing it with Chun Mee Moon Palace. To me, Grey’s Darjeeling Margaret’s Hope has a sweet fruity aroma along with the famous muscatel favour, raisiny in my case. The liquor itself isn’t sweet and also has elements of astringency, maltiness and what I’d call earthiness. If this sounds strange the tea is wonderful. It’s favour lingers long and leaves a sparkling clean palate.
Service: Smashing teas at affordable prices!

I’m not always a fan of Darjeeling teas because they can be rather thin tasting but this is a hit with us. There’s a pleasant but subtle smoky taste to it – much less strong than a Lapsang Souchong but enough to make an interesting, unusual flavour. An excellent tea for breakfast or afternoons.
Jonathan Rippon (verified owner) –
Superb tea that has everything I want from a Darjeeling.

I’ve tried a fair few varieties of Darjeeling but this is definitely one of my favourites. It has a slightly ‘earthy’ taste that reminds me of ‘The Campbell’ from the East India Company. But it still has that ‘leafiness’ that makes Darjeeling so enjoyable.

Product: It’s a terrific tea – I drink my darjeeling with milk so need the stronger ones. But it’s so expensive this year – I won’t be buying this often.
Service: Great selection of teas and very good descriptions. Sensible packaging. Tea seems pricey this year, though.

Service: Good service
Vendor response: I am sorry to hear that the tin was dented. This is the first occasion we have heard of this problem. We do protect them with stiff corrugated card inside the padded outer bag. It also states ‘Do not crush’ on the label but realsie that unfortunately this could be seen as an invitation to a minority. If you would like us to send you a new tin of this tea please contact us.

5 star [rating panel isnt responding]. When I reviewed this tea 4 years ago I said it was my favourite tea. Ive tried several darjeelings since then and there isnt one I like more. This is probably as much to do with the plantations’s history and ethos as with taste; my palate isnt sophisticated enough to differentiate consistently.
I think it would be fair to say now that it is one of my 2 favourite teas, the other being Nepalese Kathmandu
David Phillips (verified owner) –
Excellent as ever. It doesn’t say on the packet which flush it is but I guess it isn’t first flush which is thinner and more astringent
Perhaps my taste buds are changing with age but I always used to prefer Assam Harmutty but now drink Margaret Hope most of the time
Deborah Smith –
Excellent floral Darjeeling
an amazing discovery
