Description

Rwanda organic tea Rukeri OP: good body and spicy

This excellent black tea is not from Kenya in fact, but from the central African country of Rwanda. It is ideal for tea production having high altitudes up to 8,000 feet and being warm and humid with high rainfall. Daytime heat is often softened by mists and at night the hills bring frosts, stressing the leaf to bring out the natural flavour. This Rwanda organic tea is from the Rukeri garden located on highly fertile, well-drained marshland to the north of the capital Kigali. The garden is fifty years old but is relatively new to orthodox tea production so successfully utilises the skills of an experienced Sri Lankan manager to produce a well-made leaf of a quality comparable to Ceylons. The bushes are largely of more elegant China stock rather than Assam. This organic OP grade Rwanda orthodox tea has an attractive, tippy, wiry leaf. In the cup it appears golden, coppery-red with a deeply aromatic aroma. On the palate it is medium strength with good body and a certain citrus spiciness yet without excessive tannins. It provides welcoming relief to the end of a working day! Use one teaspoon per cup and one for the pot with freshly boiling water and infuse for four minutes. Milk is optional.

Although first grown in the 1920s it was not until the 1950s that Rwandan teas began to be appreciated. The high altitude of 5,000-8,000 feet makes the tea gardens here amongst the highest in the world and this gives a climate that is cooler and damper than would otherwise be expected at this equatorial latitude. The night-time cold at these elevations causes stress to the tea bushes, encouraging their flowering and resultant flowery flavour. The volcanic soils are well drained and full of nutrients which form the perfect growing environment for flavoursome teas.

"This is the first time I have used Grey's Teas – and it won't be the last. The selection of teas available is superb, particularly for a lover of traditional Indian/Ceylon black teas like myself and the chance to try blends from Kenya and Rwanda was too good to miss. Service was excellent and the teas arrived promptly and since then I have been enjoying a different cuppa every day. Very impressed and would recommend to anyone." Kevin. East Devon.

Tea from Grey's Teas

Our teas are loose leaf and we specialise in large leaf grades. All are made using traditional orthodox methods. Our teas are from named tea gardens or defined areas of origin.

Sourcing our tea

This Rwanda organic tea has been chosen for its distinctive, balanced flavour, aroma and appearance. Our tea is carefully sourced from long-established shippers. We can therefore guarantee the quality and origin of each tea and that it conforms to UK food and drink health regulations and our own demanding grading requirements.

The benefits of loose leaf tea

This Orthodox organic Rwanda tea enables the full flavour characteristics of the tea to infuse. This tea is chosen for its high grade which imparts the flavour and aroma characteristics for which this tea is best known. A little extra time is necessary when infusing large leaf grades but you will be rewarded with a superior, more balanced cup. You will be well rewarded for your patience!

  1. SEAN BROWN (verified owner)

My new daily driver tea wise so to speak. Lovely and strong, not the most complex of teas but more than made up for by the fact that is well flavoured and extremely well balanced. Enjoyed best with a dash of milk I’ve found.

  2. Steve Chesterfield (verified owner)

Decent value, solid performance. Quite strong. Lacks complexity but still good value.

  3. Andrea (verified owner)

A very good value tea. It is strong and bright, well balanced and well rounded. A good everyday tea for those who like it strong. I have it with a little almond milk.

  4. CHRIS (verified owner)

An excellent value tea. Can be enjoyed anytime of day.

  5. Sayaka (verified owner)

I made a repeat purchase of Rwanda orthodox tea. Rich and bold taste with nice aroma that reminds me why I love tea.
